Wonderful Wednesday #6 - Michelson Museum of Art

We are so lucky to have a perfectly appointed art museum right smack dab in the middle of our little town.

They host free art camps for children in the summer, have school tours regularly, hold charity functions within the museum, and have the most perfectly lovely group of volunteers and staff that make sure everything runs smoothly.

Visiting collections make their way through as do the offerings of local artists.

There is no fee for admission and they are open for viewing Tuesday - Friday 12-5PM and Saturday & Sunday from 1-4PM.

The Michelson Art Museum was established in 1985 to house the collection of Leo Michelson, a 20th century Latvian impressionist painter.  It also is the home of the Gloria and Bernard Kronenberg collection of post-impressionist art and the Ramona and Jay Ward collection of African masks and artifacts.  An interesting tidbit about Mr. Ward:  he was the creator of the Rocky & Bullwinkle, George of the Jungle, and Dudley-Do-Right cartoons.

Diva and I had a marvelous time last Tremendous Thursday talking to the ladies of the museum and looking at the collections.

My favorite was a most stunning collection called "Catharsis" while Diva favored the vibrant Madi art installations.

If you would like to know more about their summer art camps (they do fill up quickly) give them a ring at (903)935-9480 or better yet, walk in and peruse the galleries then sign up Junior for an art class.

  1. Dear Parry,
First, you and the Diva were the subject of much positive comment at the Michelson "phone book" opening.Could you be a Renee Zelweiger (sp.?)look-a-like? Of course, the Diva charmed all with her rapt attention, confident manners, and lovely appearance.Just the fact that she came - you brought her - is so commendable. The whole response overwhelmed us.
The feature on the Michelson is perfect in tone, length, and information stated.I agree with your motivation in posting it; there are many entertaining, interesting, and educational opportunities in our little town.Thank you for being our " perfectly prctical" blog publicist.

  2. Thank you for your kind words. And if anyone wants to ask Renee if she needs a stunt double, I'm willing to help. :)
