What's Cooking?

These are some cake balls SuperMom made the other day
for a Breast Cancer awareness fundraiser

Cake balls seem to be all the rage much like cupcakes were not so long ago.  I needed to make a quick and easy desert for the kiddos at church and as I had all of the ingredients on hand, I thought that cake balls would be the answer.

These seriously are the easiest things in the world to make (besides Oreo truffles or meringues.)

Cake Balls

Any flavor of boxed cake mix - I prefer chocolate
A complimenting flavor of canned icing - I prefer white (hey, I never said they were good for you)
Chocolate or candy coating for dipping

Make the cake in a 9x13 as per instructions on the box.
Once the cake is out of the oven and cool, break it up and put it in the mixer along with the contents of the can of icing.
Mix until totally combined.
Put the mixture in the fridge for a little bit while you have a cup of coffee and watch Paula Deen.
Once Ms. Deen's show is over, get out your melon baller or smallest ice cream scoop and scoop out balls of the mixture onto a wax paper lined tray.  (At this point you could flash freeze them and put them in a ziptop bag for later if you wanted to.)
Melt the chocolate or coating in a double boiler then dip the balls into the chocolate and place back onto the wax paper.
Voila!  You have made cake balls!  If you are so inclined, you could get creative with the decorations but for my purposes, we just ate them as is.

*Note:  Because I can never leave well enough alone, and I wanted a slightly spicy taste, I put pumpkin pie spice in when I mixed it all together.  I love the taste of warm spices with chocolate so I think they worked well.  Next time, I might even try instant coffee granules in them.  This is a great recipe because you can mix and match nearly everything about it!  And FYI, they were a hit with the kids and adults!

  2. Well thanks Miz Helen but I can't take credit for those. Super Mom made them for a fundraiser last week and I asked her permission to use her picture with my post. My cake balls were nowhere near as pretty. :) Thanks for stopping by!
