Red Hot Apples
Sometimes the leftover fates all line up.
Let me go back.
For our big extended family Thanksgiving feasts, my cousin would make a warm side dish that consisted of apples, red hots, and marshmallows. Everyone loved her side dish but as I'm not a huge fan of marshmallows, I would wait until the melted marshmallow goo was mostly taken by other people and then I would go for those yummy spicy apples.
So when I was faced with a bag of apples that were looking a little worse for wear, 1/2 bag of red hots, and the dregs of three bottle of wine I knew immediately that my cousin's apples were going to be my inspiration.
Always a fan of the crock pot, that's how these were cooked instead of in the oven.
If you like yours a little sweeter, add more sugar or some marshmallows over the top and brulee them.
Not a wine drinker? No problem, substitute apple juice instead.
I like to eat these warm but they are also good cold as part of a salad sampler. I also think they taste better the next day...with unsweetened freshly whipped cream...
Red Hot Apples
3lbs. Apples
3/4c. Red Hots (roughly half of a bag)
1 3/4c. Wine (I used red...from three different bottles...don't judge)
1/3c. Sugar
Throw everything in a crock pot and mix together.
Cook on low for 5-6 hours depending on how hot your crock pot cooks.
That's it! You can't get much simpler than that.
This is part of FPT.
Looks like a yummy Christmas morning treat. Thanks!
